Beach Days with Dad

Building Confidence One Summer at a Time

Not every beach day begins with a pail and shovel or a neatly packed beach bag. Sometimes the most unforgettable memories are the simplest ones like a father, a son, a soccer ball, and an evening with nowhere else to be.

I remember riding in the back seat of Dad's old pickup truck, the springs bouncing over every bump in the road as the summer songs played through the speakers. My tousled blond hair danced in the breeze from the open window, and every mile brought us closer to the ocean.

When we pulled into the little beach parking lot, I couldn't wait another second. I jumped from the truck and raced across the sandy path, the sea oats swaying beside me as the salty air rushed in my face to greet us. Just beyond the dunes, the Atlantic announced itself with its familiar roar, waves rolling endlessly toward shore as if welcoming old friends home.

Dad followed behind; never in a hurry. In one hand he carried a worn soccer ball we kept in the car, and in the other, a paper bag holding two sandwiches wrapped in crinkled wax paper. That was all we needed to enjoy our time.

Beach days with Dad were different.

Mom's outings were thoughtfully planned, with picnic baskets, sunscreen, extra towels, snacks, and everything a family might possibly need. Dad's beach days were wonderfully spontaneous. We simply showed up, sat on a towel pulled from the truck, and let the evening unfold.

The wind tugged at our napkins as we laughed and chased them across the sand before they could disappear into the dunes. We finished our sandwiches, emptied our Capri Suns, and watched a few seagulls circle overhead, hoping for forgotten crumbs.

Then Dad stood up, smiled, and tossed me the soccer ball. Without saying a word, the game began.

The sand made every kick unpredictable, and every bounce carried the ball dangerously close to the surf. We laughed as we chased it together, racing the waves before they could claim it. Sometimes Dad reached it first. Sometimes I did. He let me win just enough to make me believe I could. Then he'd steal it away with a grin that challenged me to try again.

We weren't keeping score. Dad was just building my confidence.

During those visits, the sun slowly drifted toward the horizon, painting the sky with soft gold, peach, and lavender. The ocean reflected every color, turning each wave into liquid light. Our footprints stretched long across the beach as the evening breeze cooled the warm summer air.

I didn't know it then, but Dad wasn't just teaching me how to kick a soccer ball. He was teaching me persistence. He was teaching me resilience. He was teaching me that falling behind only meant running a little harder the next time.

Years later, I can still hear the laughter carried away by the wind and see my father jogging through the shallow surf, pretending I might actually outrun him. I remember feeling brave because he believed I could be.

Those are the gifts fathers quietly leave behind. Not expensive toys. Not elaborate vacations. Just ordinary evenings that become extraordinary memories. Every kick across the sand, every shared sandwich, every race to beat the waves became another stitch in the fabric of childhood. If we are lucky, those are the moments we carry into adulthood.

Those are the memories that built our confidence one summer at a time.
