Slow Sandy Rides
Exploring Bermuda One Pedal at a Time
There is something wonderfully freeing about leaving the car behind.
In Bermuda, that's more than a choice—it is part of the island's character. With only a limited number of rental vehicles permitted, visitors quickly discover that life moves at a different pace here. Bicycles, scooters, ferries, and quiet electric transportation become more than a way to get around; they become an invitation to slow down.
The island seems to whisper, "Take your time."
The morning begins with a sturdy turquoise bicycle waiting patiently outside the hotel. A woven basket is fastened to the handlebars, ready to collect whatever treasures the day may offer like a fresh pastry from a neighborhood bakery, a bundle of local flowers, or perhaps a tiny watercolor tucked inside a gallery along the way.
The first few pedals are easy. Warm trade winds drift across the road, carrying away the heat of the summer sun before it has a chance to settle on your shoulders. They are one of Bermuda's greatest gifts, making even the warmest afternoons feel comfortably inviting. The roads wind gently through neighborhoods where whitewashed cottages peek through flowering gardens. Brilliant bougainvillea spills over limestone walls in shades of coral, magenta, and fuchsia, while oleander blossoms sway gracefully beside the road. The island carries a fragrance all its own, a blend of salt air, flowering vines, cedar trees, and warm sunshine. It is sweet, slightly spicy, and unmistakably Bermuda.
Soon the road rises, and from the crest of the hill turquoise coves sparkle beneath the morning light. Bridges connect one small island to another, offering breathtaking views where shallow lagoons melt into the endless blue Atlantic. The water is so clear that boats appear to float effortlessly above the sandy bottom, while patches of coral shimmer just beneath the surface.
It is impossible not to stop. Every bend in the road seems to reveal another photograph waiting to be taken. Another quiet beach and hidden cove are just another reason to linger just a little longer.
By midday, a neighborhood pub offers welcome shade from the sun. The bicycles are leaned casually against a weathered wooden fence while laughter spills from the open windows. A cool Rum Swizzle arrives at the table, its citrus flavors and island spices becoming another memory to tuck away before the journey continues.
Back on the bike, the afternoon grows wonderfully unhurried. Birdsong fills the air from gardens alive with butterflies and hummingbirds. Tiny tree frogs begin their gentle chorus as the day stretches toward evening. Palm fronds rustle overhead while the ocean glitters just beyond every curve in the road.
Everywhere you look, the island feels wonderfully alive. There is no rush here: no traffic, no urgency, and only the quiet rhythm of turning pedals and the steady breeze reminding you that life was never meant to be hurried.
As the afternoon gives way to evening, the bicycles find their place beside dozens of others outside the restaurants and harbors. Baskets that began the morning empty now hold small reminders of the day: a handmade ornament from a local artisan, a seashell discovered along a quiet beach, perhaps a bottle of island preserves or a favorite photograph waiting to be framed back home. The treasures themselves are simple, but the memories they carry are priceless.
As dinner begins beneath soft string lights and the last glow of sunset settles over the harbor, you realize the greatest souvenir from Bermuda isn't something you can carry home in your basket. It's the feeling, the feeling of moving just slowly enough to notice the fragrance of the flowers and the kindness of strangers who wave as you pass.
Bermuda life is the quiet joy of discovering a world that still believes life is meant to be savored, one gentle mile at a time.
