The Beauty of a Peaceful Summer Mind
There is something nostalgic about waking up in a seaside cottage before the rest of the world stirs.
I pull back the white linen sheers that soften the early morning sunlight and watch the golden glow spill across the room. For a moment, everything is still. The day stretches ahead with endless possibility, and the only decision that feels urgent is which sundress to slip into for the morning coffee run.
With freshly manicured toes peeking from soft leather sandals, I am reminded that summer invites us to rediscover parts of ourselves tucked away during the long New England winter. I slip on my shoes, quietly leave my sleeping family behind, and step into the cool morning air.
The emerald marsh grass glistens with dew as I follow the sandy path toward the marina and Surfside Coffee. The familiar sound of the morning ferry horn echoes across the harbor, sending goosebumps across my arms and carrying me back to childhood mornings spent waiting in line with my father for hot chocolate and homemade cinnamon dough sticks. Some memories never leave us; they simply wait for the right scent, sound, or season to return.
Seagulls circle overhead as the first boats begin to arrive. The salty breeze mingles with the aroma of fresh coffee and warm pastries, creating a fragrance that feels uniquely Nantucket. It is the scent of vacation. The scent of slowing down. The scent of remembering what matters.
As I stand watching the water, coffee warming my hands, I find myself thinking about my own daughter. I hope she will remember these simple moments someday—the peaceful walks, the ferry horns, the quiet conversations, and the feeling that summer held endless possibility.
Perhaps a peaceful summer mind is not found in grand adventures at all. Perhaps it is found in the small rituals that invite us to slow down, notice our surroundings, and savor the beauty of being exactly where we are.
For me, it begins with morning sunshine, a walk by the water, and a grateful heart ready to welcome another summer day.
