The Summer We Learned to Love

The first summer you fall in love is the summer you never forget.

Perhaps it arrives quietly, disguised as an ordinary June afternoon. Two young people finding every excuse to spend another hour together before the responsibilities of adulthood begin to call. Summer becomes a season measured not by calendars, but by shared sunsets and the growing anticipation of seeing one another again tomorrow.

Those were the summers of first jobs and hopeful dreams.

We worked long hours, carefully saving for the university semester waiting just around the corner. The days were filled with customers, schedules, and responsibilities, but every break seemed to include a handwritten note tucked into a mailbox, a simple text asking, "What are you up to?” or plans for a movie later that evening. Life suddenly felt brighter simply because someone was thinking about you.

Some nights it was nothing more than an ice cream cone melting faster than we could eat it. Other evenings, we found ourselves driving nowhere in particular with the windows rolled down, and loud music drifting through the warm summer air.

Holding hands was enough. The strong palm gently enveloped yours. The gentle brush of fingertips sent a quiet rush through your heart, a spark that seemed almost impossible to explain. The smallest touch carried enough electricity to last until you were together again.

Like clockwork, as the day faded, we always found ourselves returning to the shoreline.

Flip-flops dangled from our fingers as our bare feet settled into the cool, damp sand. The ocean breeze swept away the heavy humidity that had lingered all afternoon, replacing it with the familiar scent of saltwater and sea grass. Waves rolled gently toward shore before slipping quietly back into the sea. Above us, the sky transformed into soft shades of amber and deep violet. Strokes of color laid out like a beautiful impressionist’s painting, with wispy trails of passing clouds as the sun slowly disappeared beyond the horizon.

Without saying much, we wandered together along the water's edge. Kneeling into the wet sand, you traced a simple message with your fingertips. Perhaps only two initials joined by a heart.

Perhaps a single word. Perhaps simply... Love.

The sand felt creamy beneath your hands, yielding easily with every letter before the next wave slowly erased it. Your light summer dress danced in the evening breeze while the person beside you smiled quietly, committing the moment to memory just as you were.

Neither of you spoke much about autumn. You both knew it was coming: new classrooms, new schedules, and new responsibilities. Life would soon become wonderfully busy, carrying you toward the future you were working so hard to build.

Maybe that's why those summer evenings felt so precious. They taught us that love is not measured by grand gestures or perfect plans. It is found in ordinary moments of shared laughter, salty air, sandy feet, gentle hands, and sunsets that ask nothing of us except to pause and be present.

Summers last only a season, but the way they teach our hearts to love stays with us forever.
