Stay a Little Longer
There comes a point in every summer when the evenings begin to change.
The days are still warm. The sand still holds the afternoon sun, and bare feet still find their way to the water. But somewhere between dinner and sunset, the breeze feels different. You notice it first on your shoulders, so you reach for your favorite slouchy sweater. The soft one you almost left behind because it was August and surely you wouldn't need it. You pull the sleeves over your hands, settle a little deeper into the blanket, and decide you aren't ready to leave.
Not yet.
There is something beautiful about those late-summer evenings when staying becomes a choice.
Maybe the children are still at the water's edge, determined to squeeze one more swim from the day. Maybe someone you love is walking the shoreline, stopping every so often to pick up a stone and toss it toward the horizon. Perhaps everyone else has already wandered home? And for a few quiet minutes, it is simply you with the sound of the waves echoing through your ears and your own joyful thoughts.
The beach feels different at this hour.
The bright blues of afternoon soften into gold. Towels are gathered. Chairs are folded. Conversations become quieter and muffled. A bottle is opened, something cool is poured, and no one seems particularly interested in checking the time. Instead, you tuck your toes beneath the blanket and stay still, contemplating anything that settles into your soul. The shore reinvigorates you simply by being in attendance.
Years later, it won’t be the big summer plans you remember most. You will remember this instead.
The sweater that smelled faintly of salt after spending the season tossed into a beach bag. The cool sand beneath your feet. The way the sunlight caught the water just before disappearing. Someone calling from farther down the beach. The familiar laugh carried back to you on the breeze.
We spend so much of summer trying to hold onto it without realizing that sometimes the simplest way to do that is to stop moving.
To watch.
To listen.
To notice the season changing while we are still inside it. There will be other evenings. Other summers. Other sunsets, but not this one.
Perhaps that is why the first cool evenings of August can feel both comforting and bittersweet. They remind us that seasons do not announce their endings. They simply begin leaving in small ways: a little less daylight, a cooler breeze, a sweater pulled over sun-kissed skin, and smiling faces.
Maybe, just instead of wishing summer would slow down, we can slow ourselves instead. Pour another glass, pull the blanket closer, and watch the people you love along the shore.
The evening can wait a few more minutes. Stay a little longer and save these moments for the soul.
🤍A Heart Stitched Thread
Sometimes a life is stitched together in the moments we almost left too soon. When the evening grows cooler, pull your sweater close, look around once more, and stay long enough to remember it.
Thank you for spending part of your day with us.
