The Voice That Feels Like Home
There are books we read once, and there are the ones we return to.
Their covers soften, and certain pages begin to fall open on their own. We always know what happens next, but somehow that isn't the point anymore. The story has become familiar enough to feel like a place we can visit. , and sometimes, the person reading it to you becomes part of that place too.
Maybe it's your sister stretched beside you on a blanket, or a friend you've known through so many versions of yourself that neither of you remembers exactly when the friendship began. She begins reading a passage you've both heard dozens of times from one of those chapters you both know by heart.
As you relax, you hear only her words; her voice.
You know where she'll pause. You anticipate the sentences she'll rush through because she's excited to get to the next one. You wait for the character she'll give just a little more attitude to. You relish the part that always makes her laugh before she can even finish reading it. With a smile on your face and familiar joy in your soul, the experience restores you. Her cadence and tone become stitched into your memory of the story and memory of this day.
Years later, you may pick up that same book and discover that you don't hear the narrator's voice at all. You only hear hers.
There is something quietly intimate about being read to. We often think that slowing down requires silence, but sometimes the sounds we love are what soothe us most. A familiar voice doesn't always need to offer advice or ask what's wrong. Sometimes it can simply say, “ Listen to this,” and let the book carry your conversation.
When we step together into someone else's world, we stop thinking so much about ourselves. We imagine the characters. We disagree about what they should have done. We laugh. We interrupt. One of us always says, “Wait—read that part again! " Without realizing it, we are learning something about each other, too. Perhaps that's why certain stories become places of comfort.
As summer begins to wane, our daily lives change as well. Children return to classrooms, vacations wind down, and afternoons become scheduled again. The sun sits differently in the sky, and evenings begin arriving just a little earlier. Summer isn't gone, but the easy abundance of time begins to disappear. Perhaps that makes the time we intentionally create for one another even more precious.
Years from now, you may not remember exactly what you wore that afternoon or what you packed for lunch. Somewhere tucked into the recall of those moments, you will still hear your sister's laugh or your friend's voice finishing the sentence you both already knew by heart.
And suddenly, you're there again: warm sand, changing light, a familiar voice, a story you love and a person you love.
So make time to read a few pages aloud with the person whose voice feels like home.
